The invention of a microscope has opened a lot of medical discoveries that made a lot of difference in the world of science. A priceless tool in today’s research and education which made countless contribution in the field of biology, medicine, dentistry, chemistry, dermatology, veterinary uses, and everyday uses to advanced research.
Microscopes can be used in a number of different ways by people in all walks of life. A hobbyist for instance can take advantage all the benefits of a microscope in studying and analyzing gems, stamps, coins, and other field of interest. The availability of microscope in school can arouse the hidden interest of students in discovering things not visible through our naked eye and to all medical practitioners who use this equipment from medical analysis to advanced research in many varied disciplines. Even the law enforcement uses this technique through forensic microscopy in fast tracking criminal investigation and other related topics.
Majority of the microscopes now are called light microscopes, and within this category comes the two major types of microscope. The most common type is the high power microscope or what we commonly known as compound microscope and the second type is referred to as stereo microscope or low power microscope.
Compound microscope is the most common type because of its magnification capabilities and it can be used in various purposes. Going back to the old days, compound microscopes can either be monocular (only one eye could be used) or binocular (both eyes are used). But modern compound microscopes are mostly binoculars and essentially consist of two or more double convex lenses fixed in the two extremities to a hollow tube. The closest lens to the object is what we call the objective while the upper lens nearest to the eye is what we call the eyepiece. One lens that forms an enlarge image of the specimen and the second magnifies the image formed by the first lens. The product magnification of these two lenses is the total magnification of the equipment. By the use of a reflected mirror or from a direct sunlight compound microscopes can use this source of light in illuminating the specimen to be visible in the eye.
